Remove a Password From a PDF You Can Open

Updated

Short answer: Drop the PDF into Unlock PDF, type the password you already use to open it, and download a copy that opens without asking.

Banks, payroll systems and HR departments often send password-protected PDFs, and typing the password every time gets old, especially when you need to merge, convert or upload the file somewhere that can't handle encryption.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Make sure you know the password that opens the file. Unlock PDF can't guess or crack it.

  2. Step 2: Open Unlock PDF and drop the protected file.

Open Unlock PDF(runs on our server)
  3. Step 3: Type the password and unlock.

  4. Step 4: Download the copy. It opens in any reader without a prompt, and your original is unchanged.

  5. Step 5: If you're sending it on, consider adding your own password before you do.

Why this works, and what to watch for

PDFs have two kinds of password. The user or open password encrypts the whole file: without it, a reader can't display a single page. The owner or permissions password is different: the file opens normally, but the reader is asked to block printing, copying or editing. Unlock PDF removes both. For the first you must supply the password; a file that only has permission restrictions can be unlocked without one, because its content was never really locked.

Removing the password means decrypting the file and saving it again without encryption. The pages, text, fonts and form fields are copied across untouched, so nothing about the content or quality changes. The new copy is a normal PDF that other tools can work with: many converters, upload portals and e-signature services refuse encrypted files, which is the usual reason people need to unlock one.

Bank statements and payslips commonly use a password built from your details, such as your date of birth or the last digits of an account number; the email or letter that came with the file normally explains the format. If you've lost it, the sender can reissue the document. We can't recover a password and we won't try to break one: if you don't have the right to open a file, this isn't the tool for it.

Think before you leave a sensitive document unprotected. An unlocked statement is readable by anyone who gets hold of the file, including through a synced folder or a forwarded email. A sensible pattern is to unlock, do the work you needed to do, then protect the result again with Protect PDF, which uses AES-256, the strongest encryption in the PDF standard.

Questions, answered

Can you unlock a PDF if I've forgotten the password?

No. A password-protected PDF is encrypted, and without the password there's no way to read it. Ask whoever sent it for a new copy.

What if the PDF opens fine but won't let me print or copy?

That file only has permission restrictions. Unlock PDF removes them without a password, as long as you're entitled to use the document.

Is the password sent to your server?

Yes, with the file, over an encrypted connection, because decryption happens on our server. Neither is kept: the unlocked copy is returned straight away and temporary files are deleted.
