Split a PDF into Separate Pages

Updated

Short answer: Open Split PDF, choose Every page to get one PDF per page in a ZIP, or Extract pages and type ranges like 1-3, 7 to keep only those.

A scanned batch of invoices that should be separate files, one chapter of a textbook, the signature page of a contract: splitting a PDF is one of the most common jobs there is, and it shouldn't need an upload.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Open Split PDF and drop the file.

Open Split PDF(runs on your device)
  2. Step 2: To get every page as its own file, choose Every page.

  3. Step 3: To keep certain pages, choose Extract pages and type them, for example 1-3, 7, 10-12.

  4. Step 4: Download the result: a single PDF for extracted pages, or a ZIP with one PDF per page.

  5. Step 5: To pick pages by sight instead of number, use Organize PDF.

Why this works, and what to watch for

Split PDF runs in your browser. Pages are copied from the original into new files on your device, exactly as they were: text stays text, images aren't re-compressed, and links and fonts come along. Nothing is uploaded, and there's no limit on how many files you split or how large they are, beyond your device's memory.

Page ranges use commas and dashes. 1-3, 7 gives pages 1, 2, 3 and 7. Pages appear in the order you type them, so 5, 1-4 moves page 5 to the front: a quick way to reorder as well as extract. Page numbers mean the physical position in the file, as your viewer's page counter shows, not the numbers printed on the pages, which often differ because of covers and front matter.

Every page mode produces a ZIP with one PDF per page, numbered in order. That's the right choice for scanned batches, such as a stack of receipts or forms scanned in one go, where each page is its own document. If your scans are two pages per document, extract 1-2, 3-4 and so on in separate runs, or split every page and merge the pairs.

A note on size: each split file contains the fonts and shared images its page uses, so ten one-page files can add up to more than the original. That's normal, because the shared resources are copied into each file.

The opposite job, removing a few pages and keeping the rest, is quicker with Delete pages, where you type the pages to drop rather than the ones to keep.

Questions, answered

How do I write page ranges?

Use commas and dashes, for example 1-3, 7, 10-12. Pages appear in the order you type them.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Split PDF runs entirely in your browser, so the file never leaves your device. It's free and unlimited.

Why are the split files bigger in total than the original?

Fonts and images shared between pages are copied into each file that uses them. Each file is complete on its own.
